Which of Nature’s Fashion Designers Matches Your Style?

Nature, Fashion Design

07/14/2025

It’s about time we discussed some very important fashion designers from the world of nature. See who’s making a name for themselves, and whether you can see yourself in their work.

The queens from our latest content series, where drag superstars highlight how incredible nature can be, aren’t the only ones who know how to glow up. Nature’s been creating, making, and slaying for centuries.

From the smallest flies to slightly larger crabs, here’s how nature’s queens style their looks from the environments around them.

Headpiece Honey

Mad or fabulous? This caterpillar swerves predators with style and substance, keeping old head wigs after each moult to refashion them into a bizarre accessory. After the fourth moult, it starts stacking the increasingly large structures upstairs to form what must be the world’s most bizarre ‘hat’.

Silky Seamstress

Evolution, but make it hot. Caddisflies spin a cocoon out of things they find on the riverbed, like pebbles, sand and shells, then weave those together with strands of their own silk to safely grow into adulthood. Classy.

Thrifty Queen

Like you, decorator crabs get a kick out of upcycling their fashion. Their shells are covered with velcro-like hairs, meaning they can upgrade their stock outfit with seaweed, sponges, anemones, and corals whenever they like. It’s mostly to dodge predators, sure, but who knows what positive impacts this has on their sense of style.

Pure Sofishtication

You can’t bring yourself to throw anything away, including your prized salmon hat. Orcas are thought to balance these fish on their dome as a form of playful behaviour – why don’t you try it, too? Work those angles b.
